Leonard "Buck" Burnham, 90, Bismarck, died Dec. 30, 2006, at a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Eastgate Funeral Service Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Leonard "Buck" was born Dec. 29, 1916, at Hoper, Neb., the son of Ivy and Maysie (Dickerson) Burnham. He grew up and attended school in Nebraska. During World War II, he served in the United States Army as a medic in the South Pacific. Buck married LaVerne Adams Feb. 20, 1946, in Winner, S.D. They lived in Wood, S.D., where they farmed until moving to Redfield, S.D., in 1956, where he owned and operated Bob's Service Station. They then moved to the Black Hills area, where Buck worked with people with special needs at Custer State Hospital, a job that he truly loved. In October of 2000, Buck and LaVerne moved to Bismarck.
Buck enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren. He loved socializing and visiting with friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Jerry DeBeaumont, Bismarck; his sister, Esther Brown, Winner; his brother, Jim Burnham, Wood; his five grandchildren, Cory Shantz, Josh Shantz, Heidi Chouinard, Traci Evans and Troy DeBeaumont; and his four great-grandchildren, Madelyne Shantz, Daniel Shantz, Nathan Shantz and Brandon Basiak.
He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerne; his parents; three brothers; and three sisters.
