Joined C.C.C. in 1939-1940. His parents saved his $20 for him & He then attended SDSU & graduated from there with a BS in VOC. AG In 1949.

While he was in Custer camp ( Lightening Creek) he worked on the Harney Peak area... gathering stones of a certain size with moss on them to be used for the Lookout, he had a horse with 1/2 barrel on wheels to haul it to the top. He also played his marimba at Rapid City on the radio station... One day while he was hitchhiking into Rapid City, Gutzon Borglum picked him up with his limousine & gave him a ride to Rapid... later he allowed him to get on the scaffolding that was on Washington's nose. He also did some of the stamping for the posts in the forest area.^x

Clive E. DeWald, age 91, of Watertown, S.D., passed away on Friday, July 1, 2011 at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church at 4 2nd Ave. S.E. in Watertown. The Reverend Joel Higgins will officiate. Music will be furnished by Don Seim, soloist and Lesa Dahl, organist. Military honors will be conducted by the Codington County Post 17 of the American Legion. There will be no visitation.

The family requests memorials to be designated to the Alzheimers Association.

Honorary Urnbearers will be all his grandchildren.

Clive Edwin DeWald was born on June 20, 1920 to Earl and Nina (Charnock) DeWald in Sioux Falls, S.D. He graduated from high school in Valley Springs, S.D. in 1938. Clive attended college at Sioux Falls, S.D. He was in the C.C.C. in Custer, S.D. from 1939-1940.

Clive married Ethel Stanley on August 26, 1941 at Valley Springs, S.D. and they lived in California. He worked at Lockheed Aircraft in the experimental department, building the P-80 and also on P-38's. Clive served in the U.S. Naval Sea Bees during World War II in the Pacific Theatre on Tinian and Eniwetok Atoll from 1943-1945.

Later he returned to South Dakota and graduated from South Dakota State University in 1949. Clive taught Vo. Ag. in Parker High School and Monroe High School until 1958. He was District Manager for DeKalb Seeds for 23 years for 13 counties in northeast South Dakota. After he retired Clive and Ethel spent the winters in Arizona for 20 years.

Clive was a very active member of First United Methodist Church, and was a volunteer for the city and the hospital. He was also a member of the American Legion and Masons. He enjoyed hunting, sailing, gardening and woodworking, and making macrame' chairs. He was also active in a variety of different sports.

Clive is survived by his wife, Ethel; his three sons and two daughters: Ed (Judy) DeWald of Wilsonville, Oregon, Jerry (Judie) DeWald, Cheri (Bruce) Erlandson and Yvonne (Ken) Nigg all of Watertown, South Dakota, and Earl "Val" (Becky Johnson) DeWald of Redmond, Washington; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; his brother, Earl C. (Mildred) DeWald of Mesa, Arizona; three sisters-in-law, Irene Williamson of Hartley, Iowa, Pearl Lemkuil of Sacramento, California and Beatrice Powers of Primghar, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Michael Sean DeWald; and his brother, Charles DeWald.
