Lyle B. Tennant

Gettysburg, SD

1936, 2756, Farm Island, S-207,

Lyle B. Tennant, 95, of Gettysburg, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the Oahe Manor in Gettysburg after a brief illness.

A celebration of Lyle's life will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg with Pastor Don Watt officiating. A prayer service will be at 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 19, 2010 at the church.

Lyle B. Tennant was born August 16, 1914 to Lewis and Zellora (Churchill) Tennant in Potter County where he grew up and remained most of his life. Lyle did spend two months in the CCC Camp at Pierre working at Farm Island. He was also drafted and sent to Brookings to be trained to do lathe work. However, Lyle was never sent anywhere and was allowed to return home.

On August 7, 1937 he married Doloris Zuber at Pierre. In 2007 they received national recognition on the Paul Harvey show for their outstanding 70 years of marriage.

Lyle spent his entire life doing what he loved. In 1938 he started his commercial trucking business and continued until his retirement in May 1996. He loved that on his 80th birthday he bought himself a new truck.

In Lyle's spare time, you could always find him sitting in his truck puffing a cigar and listening to Paul Harvey or having a good cup of coffee with his friends at the Medicine Rock Café. He also immensely enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and playing solitaire.

Lyle's life will be treasured by his wife of 72 years: Doloris of Gettysburg; his eight children: Phyllis Robinson of Dillon, MT, Leila Tiegen Woods of Lake Havasu City, AZ, Mary (Dennis) Hagny of Gettysburg, Maurice “Mick” (Karen) Tennant of Lebanon, Sheila (Jim) Beringer of Spearfish, Brian (Lorraine) Tennant of South Weber, UT, Brad Tennant of Aberdeen and Tony (Donna) Tennant of Springfield; 20 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; three step grandchildren, two step great grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Becky Tennant of Aberdeen; one sister-in-law: Mildred Zuber of Gettysburg and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Gerald Dean; eight sisters; two brothers; daughter-in-law: Melissa Tennant; three sons-in-law: Bob Robinson, Donald Tiegen, and Ken Woods; and one step granddaughter, Katie Koesters.
