Leonard F. Stevens, born October 14, 1911 in Mitchell, South Dakota, served family, church, community and friends. He was the beloved husband of Clare (deceased) , father of Patricia and Mary, grandfather of 8, great grandfather of 15 and great-great grandfather to one.
Leonard graduated from South Dakota School of Mines in 1934 with a Civil Engineering degree through the ROTC program. After graduation he worked with the South Dakota Highway Department building roads in the Bad Lands. He then worked as an instructor at South Dakota University for two years. After which he did a short stint working with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) until he was called to duty. He was commissioned as a US Army Lieutenant in 1941. Upon leaving the Army in 1945 he joined the Army Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. Leonard taught engineering for one year at Iowa before coming to Purdue University and in 1947, where he worked in Purchasing and Physical Facilities, retiring in 1978. He was active with Purdue's Physical Facilities golf and bowling league for many years.
Leonard was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas church, past Grand Knight and life member council 456 of the Knights of Columbus, Reserve Officers Association, Commandant of the USAR School from 1957-1963, Post 11 of the American Legion and the Elks Lodge. He was also very active with the Democratic Party and President of Meals on Wheels. Leonard was an IRS volunteer assisting Senior Citizens and residents of the Indiana Veterans Home.
Patricia and Mary's mother Getha Seidel Stevens and two great grandchildren preceded him in death.
In lieu of flowers, Leonard asked that donations be made to The Gibault School for Boys in Terre Haute, Indiana or St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in West Lafayette, Indiana.
