Building Iron Mountain Road

These photos on Iron Mountain Road are courtesy of Guy Van Nice.

Peter Norbeck, Governor and then Senator of South Dakota, was a great promoter of Mount Rushmore and had an idea for a scenic byway. He along with Cecil Clyde Gideon laid out both the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. Gideon designed the historic Pigtail bridges on Iron Mountain Road. The road connected three tunnels that all frame the faces of Mount Rushmore.

The Civilian Conservation Corps provided much of the needed labor to construct the beautiful drive in the Black Hills and other attractions.
