Ernest Delaney (Squirt)

Sgt. Ernest Delaney killed in action 9 weeks after brother. WWII, A war telegram, the second in three months, informed Mrs. Lillie Delaney of the death of her son, Sgt. Ernest Delaney, 32, who was killed in action in Germany September 22. In a previous message Mrs. Delaney had learned of the death of her son, Cpl. Harold Delaney, who was killed in action in France July 16.
Sgt. Delaney, a member of the army medical corps, had participated in three invasions, Sicily, North Africa, and France. No word had been received from him since August 22 at which time he was in France.
Just before the invasion of France the Delaney brothers met in London and enjoyed a brief visit. Ernest, better known, in Vermillion by his nickname 'Squirt' was born July 27,1912. Prior to entering the armed service in April 1942, he was employed on the T.R. Walker farm here. The following August he left for his overseas tour of duty. Cpl. Harold Delaney had also taken part in the Sicilian and North African invasions. He had been overseas since November 1942.
Ernest and Harold are survived by their mother, six brothers, one in the army, and one in the navy, and five sisters. Their brothers are John and Joe of Vermillion, Seaman 1-c James Delaney, who is serving with the navy somewhere in the Pacific, Pfc Wilbur Delaney who is with the engineering division in France, Martin of Viborg, and Thomas of Sioux City. The sisters who survive are: Miss Myrtle Delaney, Mrs. Clarence Voudry, Mrs. Earl Brown, Mrs. Lee McDonald and Mrs. Wilbur Brown all of Vermillion.
