James L. Torigian

In 1960 M/Sgt James L. Torigian of the 716th Transportation Company, Aberdeen, South Dakota, was selected as the "Best Soldier" of XIV U.S. Army Corps.

Chosen over some 21,000 other Reservists from 300 units in the Corps' five-state area of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas, Sergeant Torigian received his winner's trophy from Maj. Gen. John S. Guthrie, CG, XIV Corps.

James was the second of 8 children. James was drafted into the army before December 7, 1941 and spent most of WWII in the Pacific. He operated a personnel landing boat, taking soldiers to the sands of islands occupied by the Japanese. He and his wife Ina Mae had four children, two girls and two boys. James died at age 81.
