Henry John Borgmeyer, retired physician and rancher, 90, passed away peacefully March 13, 2002, at the Veteran's Administration hospice in Tucson, AZ. Interment was at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Henry Borgmeyer was born August 30, 1911, in Elgin, Nebraska, to Bernard and Elizabeth (Ruther) Borgmeyer.
After graduating from Creighton Medical School in 1936, he became a doctor to various Civilian Conservation Corps camps in his beloved Black Hills. Henry was united in marriage to Myrtle Irene Huwe in Deadwood in 1937 and they lived over the Old-Style Saloon #10. He served in the Army Medical Corps from January 1941 to 1946, including the invasions of North Africa, Sicily and Normandy.
Henry and Myrtle "partnered" a family practice on West Kansas City Street for 25 years, combining his $5 house calls and $3 office visits to thousands of patients with Myrtle's business skills. Henry retired in 1972 after a fall from his horse. For the next three decades, he was known for his daily walks from their home in the 1700 block of Eleventh Street to the public library.
Henry is survived by his wife of 65 years, presently residing at 6770 North Longfellow Drive, Tucson, AZ 85718-2420; daughter Jan Gallagher of San Mateo, California; son Robert of Tucson; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Rapid City Library Foundation.
