Sherman Glen Hand

Sherman Glen Hand, a lifelong Rapid City area rancher, peacefully passed away on Monday, June 7, 2010 at Echo Ridge Assisted Living Center in Rapid City.

Many from the Rapid City area will remember him from when he owned and operated the Circle H Ranch with his partners Norman and Mary Lou Hermes located at the present-day site of Mountain Shadow Camp Ground, South of Rapid City.

Sherman was born June 30, 1912 to Edgar and Maggie Beatrice Crinklaw Hand, when he was about six the family left Montana for Fall River County SD in wagon in December with temperature of -5. As they were getting to Hot Springs a man with a big car came along, it was warm and he invited them to ride into town, Sherman's mother and sister got in but Sherman stayed with his father, not wanting to leave him alone to come into the new town.

His grandfather first explored the area as a scout for the 7th Cavalry commanded by General Custer. Fortunately, his grandfather was with General Terry at the time of the Little Big Horn battle and so survived the battle there. (I can't verify this story)

Sherman was one of the last of the old time cowboys and will be deeply missed by his family and his many friends of nearly a century.

He was a proud member of the CCC in the 1930's. He liked to fish and into his old age could be found sitting in a chair or leaning against a rock with rod in hand at a local lake.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Alberta Hand, Rapid City, 2 sons: Glen (Maria) Hand, Raton, NM and Larry (Shirley), Denver, CO, 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Maggie Beatrice Crinklaw Hand, brother: Fred Hand who died in 1958, sister: Edna Ormesher, an infant grandson: Michael Glen Hand and a granddaughter: Carlyn Hand.

His grandfather Hand was Frederick from England, he homesteaded in Custer County in 1904, his grandmother was Clara Stocks from Canada. They had children Alfred, Edgar, Mildred, John and Ralph, all born in Custer County SD from 1885 to 1902. They left SD for Oregon and only John and Edgar stayed in the midwest.
