Ayres

Francis Pickne Ayres (Pink)

Custer, SD

1934, 793, Hill City, F-9, LEM
1934-36, 791, Lightning Creek, F-14, Leader

The following is from the camp newspaper, LIGHTNING FLASHES JUNE, 1936 Who's Who column.

IN COMPANY 791 - Francis P. Ayres

Member F. Ayres was born on August 5, 1867 at Humansville, Missouri. He attended the grade schools there.

When fifteen years of age, in 1882, he moved with his parents to Custer and he has made his home in this vicinity ever since.

He grew up with the West and has seen it develop from the rough frontier stage. He fought in the Indian War of 1891 which took place on the Pine Ridge Agency.

Previous to his entrance into the CCC he spent years as a cowboy, as a construction foreman on the railroads and as a logger.

"Pink", as he is known to all, entered this company on July 5, 1934. On the coming July 5th he will have been in the CCC for twenty-four months. He is the oldest member in age of Co. 791.

Pink was appointed a Leader on the day he entered the CCC and he has held that rating ever since. His record is perfect and he has never had any property charges or an AWOL.

His chief hobby is good horses and baseball is his favorite sport. Congratulations Pink, on your fine record.
