Richard Gimbel, a former resident of Hand County, died March 1 at the Veterans Hospital in Hot Springs: Gimbel, who was employed in Hot Springs, was found unconscious at his home when he failed to report for work. He is thought to have suffered a stroke.
Funeral services were held in the Veterans Chapel at Hot Springs, and burial was in the National Cemetery at Hot Springs. A memorial service was held Sunday, March 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller.
Gimbel was born March 9, 1914 at Scotland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Gimbel. He came to Hand County with his parents in the spring of 1928, settling on a farm north of Ree Heights. Following the death of his father, he continued to help on the farm with his mother, brothers and sisters. He served two years in the army part of the time in Germany. After his discharge from service, he farmed for several years, until ill health forced his retirement. He spent some time in the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, and then was transferred to Hot Springs. At the time of his death, he was employed at the Century House hotel in Hot Springs.
Surviving are his mother, who lives in Sioux Falls, four brothers, Ed, Waterville, Wash., Reuben, Ree Heights, Samuel, Miller and, John, Good Thunder, Minn., and four sisters, Mrs. George (Lorena) Engel, Le Porte, Colo., Mrs. Elmer (Martha) Pullman, St. Paul, Mrs. Gilbert (Margaret) Stainbrook, Sioux Falls, and Sarah Gimbel, New Guinea.
