Ernest C. Carlson died Monday, June 10, 2002 at Avera McKennan Hospital Hospice where he received compassionate and loving care. He was born on April 22, 1910 in Bison, SD to Carl L. and Sophie (Thoreson) Carlson. In 1912, he moved with his family to Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated from Washington High School in 1931. Following high school, he received training in the Civilian Conservation Corps, Dale Carnegie Courses, Life Enrichment Course and Telegraphy and Bookkeeping Course in the Federal Works Administration.
On March 20, 1937, Ernest was united in marriage with Freda Johnson. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Seaman 1st class. He and Freda lived in Sioux Falls, wintering for over 20 years in Mesa, AZ. In 1952, they started Carlson Paint Center, which they owned and operated until their retirement in 1985.
Ernest was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church and served on the church board and was past chairman, a member of Victory Lutheran Church in Arizona, Fellow of Augustana College Members, Past Board Member of Sioux Falls Credit Bureau, Member and Past President of the United Commercial Travelers for over 55 years, Isaac Walton Club Past President, Charter member, Past President and perfect attendance for 44 years in the South Sioux Falls Kiwanis Club and was awarded the Sam Haggar Award, Honorary member of Kiwanis Club in Mesa, AZ, charter member of Westward Ho Country Club, Sioux Falls Winter Visitor Club in Arizona, life time member of the America Legion Post 15 and life member of the VFW Post 628, and founding member of the Rolling Hills Dance Club.
Ernest will always be remembered for his sense of humor and his love for people. Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Jim A. Carlson, Sioux Falls; daughters, Alice (Dick) Bakke, Monticello, MN, Rennae (Tom) Fuzzey, Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, Montgomery Carlson, Mia Dummermuth, Megan (Jim) Jarding, Chris (Bob) Wainwright, Melanie (Kent) Peterson, Matt (Tashia) Fuzzey, Erin Fuzzey; ten great-grandchildren, two sisters, Cassandra (Hadley) Johanson, Norma Ekberg, Wheatridge, CO.
In addition to his wife, Freda, Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Vernon, sister, Mavis Gabel, granddaughter Monique Carlson, and great granddaughter, Nicole Jordahl.
The family of Ernest C. Carlson thanks you for your support and presence today. An invitation is extended to join them at the church for refreshments and fellowship following the committal service.
