John Ralph Solhjem

Leonard, ND

John Ralph Solhjem, 83, Wahpeton, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, in St. Francis Home, Breckenridge, Minn.

Mr. Solhjem was born August 13, 1920, near Leonard, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. From 1940 to 1941, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in South Dakota. From 1942 to 1945, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following his military discharge, he returned to Wahpeton. On Sept. 13, 1948, he married Evelyn Hestdalen in Webster, S.D. They lived in Wahpeton and Breckenridge. He attended North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton. He worked for Sletton Motor Co. and Reed Chevrolet, both Wahpeton. From 1957 to 1961, he served in the North Dakota Air National Guard. He later worked for Silverline in Moorhead and Krause Motors in Wahpeton. He retired in 1982. She died in 1998. He entered the nursing home in April.

He is survived by a son, John Jr., Des Moines, Iowa; three daughters, Myrna (Delano) Lotzer, Wahpeton, Dawna Vargas, Chandler, Ariz., Cheryl Dalton, Abercrombie, N.D.; two sisters, Joan Solhjem, Hankinson, N.D., Margaret (Harvey) Torgerson, Beaver Creek, Ore.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Burial: Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.
