Funeral services for Homer Andersen, 64, were held Sunday, November 2, at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastors Mark Svaren and Paul Andree officiating. Music was provided by Robert Kallesen, organist and Gerald Moe, soloist.
Pall bearers included George R. Whitehill, Mayo Neilson, Ralph Mauch, Maurice Matson, Lyle Pankratz, and Virgil Andersen.
Following committal service at the Arlington Cemetery, the Hetland Legion Post conducted military rites.
Life Sketch
Homer Clark Andersen was born January 18, 1916 to Norris and Ruby Clark Andersen at Hetland, S.D. He attended grade school and graduated from Hetland High School in 1933.
Following graduation, he worked in the CCC Camp at Pactola in the Black Hills, after which he worked for a time in California, returning to Hetland to farm with his brothers.
Prior to World War II he worked as an airplane mechanic in the Army Training Field at Corsicana, Texas where he enlisted in the Army Air Force at the beginning of World War II. As a Staff Sergeant, he served campaigns in Northern France, Rhineland, Rome Arno, Central Europe, Naples Foggia, Sicily, and North Africa. He received numerous citations and awards, including the Bronze Medal.
Following his discharge from the Air Force, he came back home, where in Hetland on November 18, 1949 he married Lulu Moe Russett. They spent their life together on a farm east of Hetland. He worked as a clerk in the Arlington Post Office, retiring in 1976.
Homer became acutely ill on September 16, 1980, and after surgery at Rochester, Minnesota and treatment at Sioux Falls, he passed away at the Lake Preston Hospital on October 30, 1980 at the age of 64 years.
He was an active long time member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and of the William B. Haufschild American Legion Post #263 at Hetland.
He is survived by his wife, Lula; two brothers, Dale of Hetland and Clayton of Lake Preston; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. His parents and his brother Elden preceded him.
He was kind and considerate and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
