Otto Volk, 91, Harvey died Sunday, January 19, 2014 at the Sanford Hospital in Bismarck.
Otto was born February 4, 1922 in Ashland, Oregon to John and Christina (Ganji) Volk. He was six months old when his parents moved back to the family farm northeast of Harvey. Otto attended rural school northwest of the Volk farm. On April 17, 1939, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served for one year at a CC camp in Alcester, South Dakota. Otto married Mary Wack on November 4, 1943 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Selz. They moved onto his family farm and their four children, Diane, David, Doug and Delila grew up there. He farmed there for 32 years. After he retired from farming he worked as a janitor for 13 years at the B. M. Hanson Elementary School in Harvey, retiring in 1985.
Otto was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey and belonged to the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a charter member of Wells Eagles Aerie in Harvey and was a volunteer on the Harvey Rural Fire Department.
Otto enjoyed fishing, bingo, going to the casino, tinkering and fixing things up. Otto always liked to stay busy. He enjoyed bribing his grandchildren with chocolate candy bars.
Otto is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Diane (Rod) Melby of Bismarck, Delila (Clyde) Vetsch of Horace, ND; son, Doug (Brenda) of Bismarck; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; sisters, Regina Bertsch of Boise, ID, Marie Taylor of Flint, MI and Agnes Miller of Scobey, MT.
Otto was preceded in death by his parents; son, David; two brothers Nick and Henry; two sisters, Amelia Fisher and Sister Fortunata (Isabella) Volk.
