Walter Wegehaupt, 99, of Mitchell, died Thursday, May 12, 2011.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, Mitchell. Burial with military honors will be in Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery, Mitchell. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.
He was born Sept. 3, 1911, at Dimock, to Adolf and Bertha (Schnell) Wegehaupt.
He attended country school through the eighth grade and then spent a year in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He served three and a half years in the U.S. Army during World WarII.
On August 13, 1944, he married Carol Blass at Frohna, Mo.
He began farming in 1946 and retired in 1977.
They wintered in Apache Junction, Ariz., for 22 years and spent their summers in Minnesota and South Dakota making many memories with their grandchildren.
In January 2010 he moved to Lake City.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell for numerous years and then the First Lutheran Church and Resurrection Lutheran Church in Apache Junction.
He attended and taught Sunday School, sang in the church choirs and was a member of the Gideon Bible Society.
He is survived by one son, Fred (Beth) Wegehaupt, Sioux Falls; two daughters: Janice (Edward) Correia, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Connie (Bruce) Stam, Lake City, Minn.; two brothers: Erwin (Maxine); and Adolph (Delores); and a sister, Linda Herrig, all of Mitchell; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Carol; two infant children, James and Julie; brothers, Carl, Albert and Martin; and sisters, Hilda Helling and Clara Wegehaupt.
