Winner, SD

1937-40, 2765, Fechner, SCS-6, Ass't Leader

Robert A. "Bob" Weak, 93, passed away March 26, 2010 in Bend, Ore. He was born Sept. 1, 1916, in Colome, S.D., to LeRoy and Mary Weak. Bob grew up on the family farm near Winner, S.D., with his parents; three brothers; and two sisters. High school sports included running track and boxing. After graduating from Winner High School in 1935, Bob worked in Rapid City, S.D., until he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps 1937-1940 to help support his family during the great depression.

Bob married the love of his life of 68 years, Alice H. Streeter, on Oct. 18, 1941, in Rapid City, S.D. They settled in Omak, Wash, after World War II, where they raised their five children and lived until 2009. Bob and Alice enjoyed traveling and camping in their RV.

While working in the CCC, Bob took pilot training through the Civil Air Patrol, and in 1944 he joined the Army Air Corps during WWII and became a P51 Mustang fighter pilot until his discharge in 1945. Bob remained in the USAF as a reservist, retiring in 1970, achieving the rank of Major. Bob worked in sales most of his postwar career, first with Bev Wilson Furniture in Okanogan, Wash., and finally with Price Motors in Omak, Wash., retiring in 1982.

Bob was active in Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Lodge 1742, BPO Elks (past Exalted Ruler), Rotary Club, and Okanogan Valley Golf Club. Bob was an avid golfer and fisherman. He also enjoyed hunting, playing bridge and volunteer work.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, of Bend Ore.; daughter, Joan Ballard of Santa Rosa, Calif.; daughter, Marilyn Ransom of Bend, Ore.; son, David Weak of Roseburg, Ore.; daughter, Kathy Richter of Omak; daughter, Patty Gariano of Omak; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m., April 5, 2010, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. A funeral mass will be held at noon, on April 6, 2010, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Okanogan, Wash., with Father Lucas Tomson officiating. Burial will follow in Omak Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church or BPO Elks Lodge 1742, Omak, Wash. Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
