Mell J. Stober

Winner, SD

Age 30. Passed away June 29 at the Veteran's Hospital, Woods, Wis. Born in Magnet, Neb., on May 10, 1918, Mr. Stober had formerly lived in Winner, South Dakota, before coming to Racine a year and a half ago. He had been employed at the Wisconsin Agriculture & Farmer. Enlisting in the U. S. Marines on Feb. 1, 1940, he was captured by the Japanese on Corregidor on May 6, 1942, and was held in Bilibed Prison in Manila and Prison Camp Cabanatuan No. 1 on the Philippine Islands and Osaka Prison Camp in Japan until the end of the war on Aug. 15, 1945. He received his discharge on April 3, 1946. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Pressman Union. Surviving are his wife, Audrey (Baker) Stober; two sons, Mell Jr. and Herbert; mother, Mrs. Emma Stober of Winner, South Dakota; three sisters, Mrs. Glen Bennett, Mrs. Glen Helm and Mrs. Lois Carroll, all of Winner, S. Dak.; three brothers, Glen Stober of Lake Andes, S. Dak., John Stober of Des Moines, Iowa, and Allen Stober of Winner, S. Dak.; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at the Strouf Funeral Home, Rev. Jerome Miller officiating. Burial will be in World War II Memorial Plot in Graceland Cemetery. Friends may call at the Strouf Funeral Home Thursday and until time of services. The U.S. Marine Corp will conduct complete military rites at the funeral home and at the grave.
