Roy Monson was born Oct. 1, 1920, along with his twin brother Ray in White Hall, Wisc., to parents Hans and Sena Marie (Yndastad) Monson. He was one of 10 children, and of those 10, there were three sets of twins. In 1921, the family moved to Alexander and farmed in the area.
Roy attended country school and Alexander High School. Roy and several of his brothers worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Roy and Ray entered on July 7, 1937. They worked in Medora and Camp Crook in South Dakota on road projects and in Minneapolis and Allen, Minn. on forestry projects.
Roy entered the armed services on Sept. 12, 1940, and served in Papua, New Guinea and the Philippines as a sergeant and squad leader. He received several commendations: Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation Badge, American Defense Service Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 9, 1945.
Roy was a farmer, owning and operating a farm north of Alexander, then a farm near Epping and last, a farm south of Alexander. He retired in 1981 and moved to a house on 12 acres overlooking the Missouri River near Williston.
Roy was a generous man and his house was always open for coffee, meals and a card game of gin rummy. Every fall, he and his brother Bill made lefse together to go with the lutefisk they loved. Roy's specialty was potato dumplings which he always shared with family and friends. He enjoyed going fishing, playing cards, reading westerns and watching western movies with his brother Bill, especially John Wayne movies whom they referred to simply as "the Duke." He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Alexander.
Roy passed away Friday, March 22, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Home in Watford City.
Roy is survived by one sister, Helen Gifford and one brother, John (Carol) Monson; and many nieces and nephews.
