Emory Philip Herring, 91, Sturgis, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at his home in Sturgis.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 15, 2004, at the First Wesleyan Church in Sturgis with Pastor Dwight Peterson officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Emory was born August 13, 1912, at Ottumwa, SD, to Elza and Matilda (Berg) Herring. His family lived at Philip, SD, before moving to Piedmont in 1928. Emory graduated from Piedmont High School in 1931.

He attended college at Black Hills State in Spearfish before working for the Civilian Conservation Corp. He then attended Springfield College and Greeley College where he received his BS in Education in 1936. Emory worked as a teacher and educational advisor for the CCC for several years. He received his Master's Degree from Northern State College. Emory served in the U.S. Army for 46 months during WWII.

Emory married Doris Shook at Pierre, SD, on March 19, 1948. From 1946 until 1977, Emory was the school superintendent for different schools with his first school being the South Shore School to his last school in Corona.

Emory and Doris also ran the Ranch Store in Kadoka for 17 summers.

He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, Disabled Veterans, and Kappa Delta Pi. Emory really enjoyed gardening, his grandchildren, and being around children.

He was preceded in death by parents, one brother, and two sisters.
