According to Mr. Gukiesen's son Terry Gukiesen, Raymond was friends with Kenneth C. Scissons, Rapid City, SD and most likely served at CCC Camp Oreville, F-16, Company 2751 in 1934.
A requiem Mass was celebrated Saturday morning in Lead for Raymond J. Gukeisen, who died as result of a heart attack Tuesday night, February 6, 1968, at his home.
The final rites were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Rev. William FitzGerald as celebrant. Requiem organ music was played by Sally McGuigan.
Serving as pallbearers were Jack Doyle, Wendell Handley, Robert Raines, Harold Asheim, Clarence Mooney, and Harold Jensen. Interment was in the Mountain Lawn cemetery, Lead, under the direction of the McColley Funeral Home, where rosary services were held Friday evening.
Ray Gukeisen, a resident of Lead for over 25 years, died unexpectedly at his home early Tuesday evening. It is believed that Gukeisen, who was taken ill while working at Homestake Tuesday, suffered a fatal heart attack.
He was born in Parkston, May 25, 1917 and attended schools there. He was married Aug. 26, 1939 in Deadwood to the former Eleanora Zimmermann, who survives.
Gukeisen, who joined the Homestake Veterans Association in May 1966, started with the mining company on March 12, 1942. During the shutdown during World War II Gukeisen was employed by the Black Hills Power & Light Co. but returned to Homestake on Nov. 2, 1945 where he had served in the mine department since. On April 4, 1967 he was promoted to underground hoist operator which position he held at the time of his death. Gukeisen who previously was employed by the former Porter Lumber Co., was a member of St. Pat. rick's Catholic Church, Lead.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia, Oct. 31, 1960, a granddaughter, Kristin Marie, Oct. 5, 1966; and by his parents and three brothers.
Survivors in addition to his wife, include a son Lt. Terry Gukeisen who is serving aboard the USS Enterprise; four sisters, Mrs. Walter Sperling, Deadwood; Lt. Col. (Retired) Irene Bryant, Hot Springs; Mrs. William ( Mary) Miller, Ethan; Mrs. Wallace (Frances) Sterling, Parkston; and two brothers, Louis, Hot Springs, and Floyd of Parkston.
