Maurice J. Classick

Funeral services for Maurice Classick, 84, who died Sunday evening at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish, will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Spearfish. The Rev. William Werner will officiate. Interment will be in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis under the direction of Fidler Funeral Chapel of Spearfish in charge.

Classick was born in Blakely, Minn., May 7, 1896. He was the son of Dennis and Freda Classick and grew up and attended school at Hurley, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I from May 1, 1916 to April 22, 1919. He was married at Hurley to the former Renie Cairy May 12, 1920.

After their marriage they lived in Hurley until the early 1930s when they came to the Black Hills where he worked at Calcite CCC Camp near Rapid City. In the late 30s they moved to Deadwood where they resided a year before moving to Sundance, Wyo., where Classick worked for the U.S. Forest Service. He served approximately 25 years at the fire lookout on Warren Peak near Sundance.

The couple moved to Spearfish in 1977. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the IOOF Lodge and the VFW Post of Sundance. He was also a member of American Legion Post of Devils Tower, Wyo.

Surviving are his wife, Renie of Spearfish; a daughter, Mrs. Bill (Maurine) Hoff, Lead; one granddaughter, two great-grandchildren, five sisters and a brother: Mrs. Clara Miller, Sioux Falls; Mrs. Florence Estervig, Huron; Marie Hill, Richmond, Calif., Margaret Hartman, Lake View, Iowa, Julia Murray, Portland, Ore., and John Classick, San Pablo, Calif. He was preceded in death by a son, Maurice A. Classick and two brothers, Homer and Harold Classick.
