Funeral services for Sterling Williams, age 92 of Bison, will be 1:30pm Saturday, December 22, at the Prince of Peace Chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon with Pastor Brad Abelseth, officiating.

Burial will be in the Bison Cemetery with full military honors afforded by the Rogers-Smith American Legion Post #255 of Bison.

Special music will be provided by Todd Buer and Lester Longwood.

Serving as Honorary Bearers are Lenard Chapman, Jim Wilson, Roy Hulm, and Bob Hanson, and all Sterlings family and friends.

Serving as Active Casketbearers are Warren and Ross Williams, Llewellyn and Clint Englehart, Lynn Waddell, John and DeLane Erickson, and Dave Kolb.

CARL STERLNG WILLIAMS was born to Howard J. and Anna K. (Peterson) Williams on September 10, 1915 in Perkins County, SD. He attended Bakke School with his brothers and sisters until his mother passed away in January of 1925, when he was only 9 years and 4 months old. Howard and the boys batched on the homestead while the three girls stayed with their grandparents.

Sterling joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC's) working in the southern Black Hills near Hot Springs and Custer. Later he and a friend jumped a box car headed for the West Coast where they hoed beets and picked vegetables until they earned enough money to come home.

In 1942, Sterling left to serve his country in the U.S. Army until November of 1945, spending his years guarding the West Coast against a possible Japanese invasion. After returning home, he continued ranching with his dad, Howard and brother, George. He loved Hereford cattle and raised some of the best. He enjoyed team roping and even bowling for a time.

Sterling served many years on the Rainbow Township Board. Friends and family enjoyed stopping for sour dough pancakes and it didn't have to be breakfast time.

Sterling passed from this life on Wednesday morning, December 19, at Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon.

Surviving family members include his sister and 2 brothers-in-law, Grace and Jim Leedy, Winter Park, FL; Bud Brumley, Wichita Falls, TX; 1 sister-in-law, Kay Williams, Bison, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Eva Lockwood Larsen and Gladys Brumley, two brothers, LeRoy and George Williams.
