Harry Winfield Scott, 92, of Wilmot, SD passed away Feb 6, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. He was born in Waverly, MN on October 12, 1919, and graduated from St Mary's HS. His parents, L. Elmore and Alice, (McKay) moved the family to a farm south of Wilmot on Hwy 15 in 1936. After graduation, Harry farmed with his parents on their farm and joined the CCC Forest Service, where he planted trees and did conservation work with Company 793 Camp 15 Tigerville at Deerfield Lake and worked on the Sheridan Dam project (1938-1940) in the Black Hills around Hill City near Mt Rushmore.
Harry married Betty Reyelts on October 5, 1942. They homesteaded on the farm in 1945, in Springdale Township-Roberts County. Harry and Betty with their children developed a dairy, swine, livestock and crop farm. Harry continued to farm until recently as portions of the farm were sold to area farmers. Harry was an avid conservationist having been awarded 1964, Greater SD Assn conservationist of the year, and county recognitions and awards for his 65 years of agriculture conservation practices.
His leadership skills were demonstrated often as a St Mary's Church member, Coop Board of Director, Wilmot School District Board member, Wilmot City Councilman and Mayor, Roberts County Board of Supervisors for 25 years and as a member of the Democratic Party. Wilmot baseball fans were entertained and thrilled for many years as Harry pitched hundreds of games in his younger years for the Wilmot A's including State championship games in 1948. After moving into Wilmot City some 20 years ago, he was known for removing snow from many parking areas and home driveways.
Harry was preceded in death by parents, Elmore and Alice; wife Betty (1992); brother-in-law and sister, Jack and Eileen Jude; brothers, Jess, Raymond and Ralph. He is survived by sister, Rosealice (Ray) Hayes of Buffalo, MN. Harry is survived by their 4 children: Bob of ST Cloud, MN/Wilmot; Jim (Elizabeth) of Tucson, AZ; Ron of Aberdeen; Joyce (Thomas) Van Thomme of Lakeville, MN; Five grandchildren: Sarah (Farhan) Khan; Patrick (Vanessa) Eberbach; Stephanie (Tom) Charles; Nathan Scott; and Meghan (Bill) Scott. Five great-grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 3 step great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in St Mary's Catholic Church in Wilmot on Monday, February 20 at 10:30 am with Father John McMullen officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 5-7 pm at St Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery. Cash donations and contributions are preferred by the family and will be given as a memorial for Harry to local Wilmot charities and organizations.
