Clarence Abeln, 98, Mitchell died Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at the South Dakota Veterans Home in Hot Springs, SD.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 28 at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Burial in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at rural Stickney.
Clarence Ellwood Abeln was born February 24, 1920 in Mitchell, SD to Mark and Irene (Murray) Abeln. He grew up and attended school in Mitchell. He enlisted in the US Army in 1939, serving in New Guinea and the East Indies during WWII. He was honorably discharged in June 1945. On June 9, 1946 he married Martha Sperlich at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Stickney. He farmed his entire life in Aurora County near Stickney until retiring in 1995. He has resided at the SD Veterans Home in Hot Springs since 2009.
He is survived by one son, Gary Abeln of Stickney; one daughter, Sheri (Terry) Schrank of Corsica; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2008, 3 brothers and two sisters.
