Paul S. Burger, age 89 of Evansville, IN, formerly of Washburn, passed away Monday, May 17, 2010 at the Parkview Care Center in Evansville.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, May 21st at Goetz Funeral Home in Washburn. Visitation will be from 12 Noon to 2:00 PM Friday.
Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn. Military Rites provided by the Minot Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Paul was born November 21, 1920 near Harrold, South Dakota to Joseph M. & Bessie (Hill) Burger. He attended school in Harrold and graduated from high school in 1938.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1938 to 1942 in the Black Hills of South Dakota, where he worked on several projects, including the prominent observation tower on Harney Peak.
During World War II, Paul served in the Army Air Corps from June 1942 to December 1945. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant, working as a crew chief/flight engineer on B-25 and A-26 aircraft. He worked in research and development at Pensacola, Florida, Dayton, Ohio and in Utah. Paul's service is chronicled with the Library of Congress in the Veteran's History Project.
He married Viola Obenauer in August 1947 at Glendive, Montana. To this union, Paul and Viola were blessed with three children. In his younger years, Paul enjoyed dancing with his wife. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards and listening to Paul Harvey on the radio. In later years, he enjoyed watching baseball and football games on television. His skill at all things mechanical was widely known and he maintained lifelong interests in reading and learning.
Paul is survived by his children, Linda (Joe) Brockel of Bismarck, ND, Dr. Patricia (Dr. Mark) Morrison of Evansville, IN, and Steven (Jeri) Burger of Evansville, IN; Eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and ten step-great grandchildren.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife (Viola), three sisters, one infant brother, two half sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.
