Robert G. Watson, 76, of 812 Westmoor Drive, a self-employed accountant, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at the McKennan Hospice of heart disease.

Mr. Watson was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Mitchell. He graduated from DeSmet High School. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s in the Black Hills doing road survey work.

He married Loretta Minnerath June 30, 1944, in Harrisburg, Pa., while stationed at the Indiantown Gap Army Base. He served in France and Germany during World War II and received a Purple Heart.

He returned to Sioux Falls in 1945 and graduated from Nettleton Business College with an accounting degree. He then taught at the college. He worked for the Robert Conn & Co. accounting firm, and he became self-employed in 1965.

He was a member of the St. Joseph Cathedral, Sioux Falls Chapter of CCC, American Legion, DAV, and Knights of Columbus. He served as president of the South Dakota Society of Public Accountants, was a member of the American Society of Tax Professionals, and the accreditation council. He was a member of the National Society of Public Accountants, and served as state director for the N.S.P.A.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Thomas of Kaneohe, Hawaii; and two daughters: Jill Watson Schneegans and Julie Wilka, both of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Jackson of Salem, Ore.

Funeral Mass begins at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Cathedral, with burial in St. Michael Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home, with a scripture vigil followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Joseph Cathedral Building Fund.
