John McLeod, 87, Mitchell, died Sunday, January 13, 2008 at his home in Mitchell. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 10:30 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6-8PM Tuesday evening with a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.
John Elwood McLeod was born September 29, 1920, at Dallas, SD, to Frank Earl and Aretia (Hale) McLeod. At age 16 he joined the Civil Conservation Corp (CCC). At age 19 he joined the US Navy where he worked on aircraft. His dream to be stationed overseas came true when he was commissioned to the U.S.S. Seawany. On this ship he served as an Aviation Mechanist Mate and Carburetor Specialist during WW II in the Pacific and was stationed in Okinawa, Tokyo and Gaum.
In 1946 he began working at the Mitchell Publishing Company in Mitchell. He purchased the company in 1966 and was renamed McLeod’s Printing and Office Supply. He retired in 1986. He was active in the Davison County Conservation Board as well as the Conservation Board of South Dakota where he served for 20 years. He was chosen to serve on the Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) focusing on the rip-rap stabilization and rebankment of Lake Mitchell. He was past president of the United Way, member of the Exchange Club, Rotary, Good Sam Club, American Legion, Elks Lodge, Holy Family Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus.
On September 29, 1947, he married Louise Doty. They had five children: Judy Jacobs (Richard), Egan, MN; Mary McLeod, Mitchell, SD; Sue Jones (Richard), Gilbert, AZ; John McLeod Jr. (Linda) Mitchell, SD and Kris Gaster (Scott), Sioux Falls, SD. He was preceded in death by Louise July 29, 1970. On February 27, 1971, he married Marvel O’Toole. She had two children, Kathleen Ellwein (Lenny) Mitchell, SD and Charles O’Toole (Carol), Sioux Falls, SD. Marvel preceded him in death on December 1, 1999. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren: Mike, Kari, Jenny, Jackie, Brian, Amy, Susie, Bobbie, Elicia, Eric, BJ, Tyler, Ryan, Katie, Shannon, Kacee, Shelly, Alex, Emily, Amber, Ben, Sam, and 16 great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by three brothers: Don, Darrel and Bill McLeod and three sisters: Ruth Lindal, Lois Bunt Piper and Francies (Frankie) Likkes.
