Everyone Loves a Parade
The camps of the Civilian Conservation Corps would often participate in local events. In South Dakota parades were popular and they still are.
The Hill City, South Dakota Chamber of Commerce organized an old time Christmas. On Friday November 25, 2016 Olde Tyme Hill City Christmas included a parade at 6pm and from the size of the crowd it must be true that everyone loves a parade.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Museum of South Dakota had an entry. Not only did it represent the C's vehicle type of the day but the colors as well. The 1934 Ford is owed by Museum board member Kerry Conner of Rapid City. The passenger was Jay Hendrickson of Hill City. Jay was a CCC Boy at Camps Roubaix and Mystic in 1937. Being a local, Mr. Hendrickson was recognized by many along the crowded parade route.
In 1924, a pageant was created to commemorate the cultures involved in defining Custer, SD which is just a few miles from Hill City. The Custer Gold Discovery Days began with portrayals of Black Hills beauty and legends, Native Americans, soldiers, and cowboys. Many events and activities were added over the years including a parade, art show, and carnival.
The Hot Springs Water Carnival began in 1927. The Miss South Dakota Pageant has its roots in the Water Carnival that was once held at Larive Lake. The festival, run by the city Chamber of Commerce through 1937, was move into town and included a talent contest, Water Festival Queen, and a parade. It brought lots of locals and tourists into the community of Hot Springs.
CCC Museum of South Dakota has entry in 2016 Olde Tyme Christmas parade.
