Burnell A. Hanson

Sisseton, SD

Burnell Hanson, 91, of Talmoon, Minn., died April 12, 2003, at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Feb. 23, 1912, in Sisseton, S.D., to Olaf and Nellie (Grove) Hanson in Sisseton, where he was raised and attended school. Following school he worked on area farms and served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills area. In 1937 he moved to northern Minnesota where he met and married Violet Parks on Feb. 3, 1940 in Deer River. He was employed as a cream truck driver for the local co-op. In 1944 he began employment with the shipyards in California until returning to Minnesota in 1945. He settled in Lake Jessie Township where he worked as a school bus driver for ISD #6. In 1951 he began employment with U.S. Steel as a heavy equipment operator where he remained until his retirement in 1972. In retirement he enjoyed fishing, camping and maintaining the family farm.

He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell, in 1993; as well as his parents, Olaf and Nellie (Grove) Hanson.

Burnell is survived by his wife, Violet; two sons, DuWayne (Debbie) of Morris, III., and Dennis (special friend Deb) of Spicer, Minn.; a daughter, Dixie (Don) Perry of Bowstring, Minn.; daughter-in-law Dorothy Hanson of Morris, III.; a brother, Donald (Helen) of Jeffers, Minn.; sisters Olive (Ron) Kruse of Superior, and Rose- mary (Dale) Wedtlan of Jeffers, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River, Minn. Service 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in Carroll Funeral Home in Deer River.
