Bernard M. Kunz, 89, Rapid City, died Sunday, June 19, 2011, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center. He was born September 6, 1921, in Sioux Falls to Henry A. and Ada Mary (Engelsen) Kunz.
Bernard grew up in Sioux Falls, came out to the Black Hills with the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped build the Harney Peak Lookout tower. He entered the United States Army in 1942, serving in the Pacific Theatre in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was awarded the Bronze Star and honorably discharged in 1945. He married Maxine Bowman in 1946 in Sioux Falls. Bud owned and operated Green Electric in Sioux Falls, moved onto serving as an electrical inspector for the state of South Dakota, moving to Mitchell in 1970 where he worked as a building inspector. He moved to Rapid City in 1972 where he worked diligently helping to rebuild Rapid City after the flood as a building inspector, retiring in 1983. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and enjoyed bird hunting.
Survivors include three daughters; Kathleen Schmidt and her husband, Wolfgang, Nemo, Carol Krugjohn, and her husband, Guy, Rapid City and Maureen Hensley, Rapid City; a son, Greg Kunz, and his wife, Shellie, Hartford, SD; ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Kunz and a son, Bernard Armstrong. A visitation will be held June 21, at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs in Rapid City. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service, Serenity Springs Chapel of Tranquility with Pastor Doug Diehl officiating. Interment with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
