Fredrick Edward Nelson
1933-34, The Service Company (Fort Meade)
Fredrick Edward Nelson was born May 24, 1911, in Sturgis, SD, to Edward and Anna (Johnson) Nelson. He was four years old when his family moved to a ranch 25 miles east of Sturgis on Lower Alkali.
He attended the rural schools in that area. During his teens and early 20's, Fred ranched with his dad and brother on the Nelson homestead. On April 30, 1936, Fred married Henrietta Venhuizen at Rapid City, SD. To this marriage, four daughters were born. They lived on a ranch near the Nelson's homestead until 1945 when the family moved to ranch north of Sturgis. Fred and Henrietta left the ranch in 1955 and relocated in Sturgis, SD.
Fred was employed at the Fort Meade Veterans Hospital until his retirement in 1976. Fred and Henrietta spent their retirement years traveling extensively and spent many winters in Arizona. They lived in Black Hawk, until 1997 when they moved back to their hometown of Sturgis.
Fred played baseball with the Alkali team during his teens and 20's He remained an avid baseball fan during later years.
Fred, 93, died Friday, November 5, 2004 at the Sturgis Community Health Care Center. He is survived by his wife, Henrietta,Stugis; four daughters, Delores Norman, Sturgis, Jeanette Johnson and husband, Merlyn, Tueson, AZ, Joyce Williamson and her husband, Thomas, Loretto, MN, and Beverly Sinclair, and John Wilson, Seattle, W; two sisters, Ethel Reichert, Spearfish, and Edna Mills, Lead; twelve grandchildren; and twenty-nine great-grandchildren.
His parents, Anna and Edward Nelson, two sisters, Leona Svendson and Florence Cordes, one brother, John Nelson, and son-in-law, Gerald Apperson, preceded him in death.
