Thomas William Sawyer, 73-year-old Deerfield resident, died at the VA Hospital in Hot Springs, Sunday, January 8, 1967. Tom was born May 27, 1893, at Chatfield, MN.
He moved to North Dakota where he lived for a short time. He moved to South Dakota in 1910. He ranched near Dupree until 1931, when he entered the National Park Service as a ranger at Wind Cave.
He later served several years as a foreman for the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1942 he moved to Deerfield and had been employed by the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Reclamation until his retirement in 1959.
He was a member of the American Legion. A memorial has been established to the Little White Church.
Surviving are his widow, Hazel; a son, Thomas Dayle Sawyer and his wife Sherrill; and grandsons, James and Michael Sawyer.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at the Little White Church in Hill City by the Rev. Marvin Gale. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD, under the direction of Hobart-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.
