George Kolund

Lynch, NE

1937, 4723, Martin, La Creek, BF-3

George Kolund was born May 10, 1919, in Omaha, Nebraska and died January 11, 1989 and is buried in the Riverview Cemetery, Chamberlain, SD.

George Kolund married Eloise Jean Kolund (Hoffman) in 1945. They had 4 children. Eloise passed away in 2005.

After serving the CCC beginning in Nebraska and then in South Dakota at Camp La Creek near Martin South Dakota Mr. Kolund served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He sent his sister Nancy a V-Mail one Christmas from The U.S.S. Camp, an Edsall-class destroyer escort. It read; "I wish I could be there for Christmas which is tomorrow but guess I will do what my Uncle Sam has for me to do maybe next year we can all spend Christmas together I hope."

A "V-Mail" was comprised of a single sheet of paper measuring 4-1/4 by 5 inches. This was converted to microfilm. The letters were printed on the receiving end and then delivered. Microfilm weight much less saving valuable space during shipping.

In May of 2019 George Kolund's son Lynn donated George's 1937 CCC Annual to the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum of South Dakota in Hill City, SD.
